Classes and work suspended in many parts or Metro Manila

Many parts of Metro Manila and nearby areas were flooded Monday August 19, 2013 amid southwest monsoon rains enhanced by tropical storm "Maring."

Malacanang has also ordered the suspension of classes and government work in areas affected by floods amid the heavy rains.

7:31 a.m. Floods in several areas in Manila have driven hundreds of families out of their homes. The following evacuation centers currently attend to victims, the Philippine Red Cross said:

Marikina:
1. H. Bautista Elem. School - 72 families with 408 individuals
2. Malanday - 23 families with 102 individuals
3. Bulelak Covered Court - 94 families,472 individuals
4. Nangka Elementary School - 74 families, 387 individuals
5. Filipinas Village Gym - 23 families, 162 individuals

San Juan:
1. Rivera Barangay Hall - 3 families, 18 individuals
2. Salapan Barangay Hall - 12 families with 44 individuals

West Rizal:
1. Central Elementary School - 90 families
2. Dona Pepeng Bato (Brgy. Banaba) - 64 families with 311 individuals
3. Maly Elem. School - 50 families, 109 individuals | via PRC Rizal Chapter

7:03 a.m.: Authorities have began releasing water from some dams in Metro Manila where water is at critical levels.


6:22 a.m.: Work in the private sector may also be suspended, depending on employers, Communications Undersecretary Manuel Quezon III said.

6:18 a.m.: A red rainfall warning remains over Metro Manila as "Maring" enhances the southwest monsoon.

5:56 a.m.: The Palace suspended classes in all levels in Metro Manila, Pangasinan, Benguet, Bataan, Zambales, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bulacan, Rizal, Laguna, Cavite, Batangas and Occidental Mindoro.

Work in government offices has also been suspended in Metro Manila, except those involved in disaster risk reduction and management.

5:36 a.m.: The southwest monsoon, enhanced by tropical storm "Maring," continues to affect the rest of the country, Pagasa said.

5:05 a.m.: The Supreme Court suspends work in all courts in Metro Manila.


5:04 a.m.: Flights to and from Caticlan have been cancelled, the Transportation department said via Twitter.
